The use of rock aggregates in concrete is fundamental for the creation of buildings and roads. It is important that the aggregates are stable in nature, without minerals that breakdown and react with the cement or when in contact with the atmosphere.

For this purpose aggregates are examined petrographically for the presence of deleterious minerals, such as reactive silicates or unstable sulphides. In some cases, it may be necessary to conduct XRD analysis to determine the presence of clays in fine-grained rocks.
